We hear this word thrown out a lot; company’s use it as a part of their marketing campaign, churches talk about it in their sermons, and people add it to their resumes of things they’ve done. But, what does it really mean?
In the dictionary it is defined as “the action of helping or doing work for someone”. Although this is somewhat of a vague definition, there is purpose behind the words. “Action”, “helping”, and “work” stand out as key components, and all for the good of “someone” else.
The word is an act of kindness. It is an act of love. It is something that we can perform in our daily lives. It is something that we can set as a goal for our businesses and for our families. It is something that every person can strive to do more of. And it is something that would make this world better if everyone would focus more on it.
Jesus sets the mark. He gave his life to serve others.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” – Mark 10:45
This weekend is Memorial Day weekend and we have the opportunity to celebrate those who have done just that: given their life for the freedoms that we all enjoy. The ultimate form of service is to give your life as a ransom for many, and I can’t think of a more synonymous way of service than from those in our military that have given their life for their country. Many have paid the ultimate sacrifice – death. Others have had life altering events, both physically and mentally, that will forever change their path. ALL have sacrificed for a greater good; our freedom.

I started my Memorial Day celebrations a little early this year by visiting Warriors Heart Healing Center in Bandera, TX, which serves as a role model for businesses that make service the heart of their mission. The leaders and staff of this company get it; every one of them have served and have made service a part of their daily lives. Their company serves those who made that life altering sacrifice to their country; they are Warriors Healing Warriors.
So, as we wave our American flags this weekend let’s do more than just say thank you to a few veterans. Let’s find ways to encompass service into our daily lives, into our businesses, and into our families. Let’s put together some plans to serve more. Let’s take action to help others.
Happy Memorial Day!
